“Instagram bot” is a label for at least four different kinds of software, and they carry very different risk. Some act on other people’s accounts to win attention. Some answer messages and comments for a business. Some publish posts on a schedule. Meta offers official APIs for the business tasks, and the line that matters is how a tool connects: through Meta’s official login, or with your password. This article sorts the kinds, says which ones we avoid, and shows what official-API automation looks like in VivaDialog.
Two articles go deeper on single kinds: the Instagram comment bot article covers comments, and the DM automation guide covers messages. The Facebook comment bot article covers the same two kinds on a Facebook Page.
The four kinds of Instagram bot
| Kind | What it does | Acts on | Typical connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engagement bot | Likes, follows, unfollows, or comments on other accounts to attract attention | Accounts you do not own | Often a password login |
| Mass-message bot | Sends DMs to people who never contacted you | Strangers | Often a password login |
| Reply automation | Answers comments and DMs sent to your account | Your own inbox | Meta’s official API |
| Scheduler | Publishes posts you prepared, at a set time | Your own account | Meta’s official API |
Engagement bots and mass-message bots
These are the bots most people mean when they search the term, and the ones we avoid. VivaDialog has no feature that likes, follows, or comments on other accounts, and none that messages people who have not written to you.
Two reasons. First, they look like spam. Instagram says it has limits in place to stop direct messages that people may not want to get. Second, many of them ask for your Instagram password or drive a browser as you. Instagram’s Help Center warns about apps that offer likes or follows and says they go against its Community Standards. Meta does not publish the activity levels that lead to a restriction, so nobody can tell you a safe number of likes or follows per day.
Reply automation
This kind answers people who came to you. Someone comments “price?” on your post, or sends a DM asking for opening hours, and a reply goes out with fixed text or an AI answer. Meta’s official APIs exist for this, and the rules are public: one private reply per comment within 7 days, DM replies within 24 hours of the person’s last message. Instagram auto reply: setup and limits puts them in a table.
Schedulers
A scheduler does not talk to anyone. It posts what you prepared. Through the official API it needs an Instagram professional account and publishing permission. VivaDialog’s Schedule page covers Instagram image, video, Reel, album, and Story posts: see how to automate Instagram posts. For Stories in particular, see post Instagram Stories from a computer.
How to tell which kind a tool is
- How does it connect? Official API tools send you to Facebook’s login screen and list the permissions they ask for. Password tools ask for your Instagram username and password.
- Who does it act on? If it acts on accounts that are not yours, it is an engagement bot, whatever the marketing says.
- Who does it message? Official reply automation answers people who wrote or commented first. A tool that promises to DM new followers or lists of strangers is the mass-message kind.
- Can you remove its access? With the official API you can remove a tool’s access from your Facebook settings.
What official-API automation looks like in VivaDialog
You connect through Meta’s login and then create automations under Automations. Each one starts from something a person did: New comment or New DM. You choose Messages with certain words, Messages with a certain intent, or Every message, and a reply of Same text every time or Answer with AI. Every automation runs under limits you cannot switch off:
- At most one automatic reply per comment or message, even when several automations match.
- Nothing older than 24 hours gets an automatic reply.
- Your own account never triggers an automation.
- One private DM per comment, only to the person who wrote it.
- A warning on the Automations page when an account connected less than 7 days ago sends more than 25 automatic replies and DMs in 24 hours. It warns and does not block, and the number is our own cautious choice, not a Meta limit.
Instagram thinks I’m a bot explains why accounts get flagged and how these limits help, and Is Instagram comment automation safe? has a checklist for switching automation on. The wider picture of reply automation is in the Instagram comment automation guide.
Frequently asked questions
Are Instagram bots against the rules?
It depends on the kind. Instagram warns about apps that offer likes or follows and about unwanted messages. Replying to comments and DMs sent to your own account through Meta’s official API is what those APIs are for. No tool can promise your account will never be restricted, because Meta decides.
What does “instagram botting” mean?
Usually running an engagement bot: automated likes, follows, or comments on other accounts. VivaDialog does none of this.
Can a bot send DMs to my followers?
Not as a first message through the official API. A conversation starts with the person: a DM to you, a comment, or a Story reply.
Is a scheduler a bot?
It is automation, but it only publishes what you wrote, on your own account, through the official API. It does not interact with other people.
Is VivaDialog an Instagram bot?
It is reply and scheduling automation for your own account, built on Meta’s official API. It does not like, follow, or comment on other accounts.
