Instagram comment automation means a tool answers comments on your posts and Reels for you when they match a rule you wrote, for example a comment that contains the word INFO. The tool can reply in public, send one private DM to the person who commented, hide the comment, tag it, or hand it to a teammate. Meta’s official API allows each of these with its own limits, and most of the trouble people run into comes from mixing the limits up. This guide is the map: what the automation can do, what Meta allows, what keeps an account out of trouble, how to set one up, and how to pick a tool. Each section links to a longer article on its topic.
What a comment automation does
An automation watches new comments and DMs and acts when one matches. You decide three things:
- What starts it: a comment, a DM, or both, optionally limited to chosen posts or to one connected account.
- What it looks for: words (with capital letters ignored), a pattern, a described intent that AI checks, or every message.
- What it does: reply with fixed text, reply with AI, send a private DM, send one reminder DM later, hide the comment, tag, assign, or move the contact to a later stage.
The most common setup is the one behind “comment INFO and get the details”: a post says “Comment INFO for the price list”, the automation sees the word, replies under the comment, and sends the person a DM with the list. VivaDialog’s help article on how automations work covers every trigger and action, and how to auto-reply to Instagram comments walks through the fields.
The paths a comment can take
Instagram gives a business tool several surfaces to answer on. Each has its own limit, set by Meta or by VivaDialog.
| What the customer did | What automation can do | The limit |
|---|---|---|
| Commented on a post or Reel | Reply to the comment in public | VivaDialog does not auto-reply to comments older than 24 hours |
| Commented on a post or Reel | Send one private DM | Meta: one DM per comment, within 7 days of the comment |
| Commented during your Live | Send one private DM | Meta: during the broadcast only, and only a DM |
| Sent you a DM | Reply in the same chat | Meta: within 24 hours of their last message |
| Replied to your Story | Reply in the DM chat | A DM, so the 24-hour rule applies |
| Mentioned you in their Story | Reply in the DM chat | The same 24-hour rule |
The first four come from Meta’s documentation of private replies and its messaging policy. The 24-hour limit on automatic replies to comments is VivaDialog’s own rule, added so an automation never answers a conversation that ended long ago. Instagram auto reply: what you can automate and the limits goes through the table row by row.
Public replies
A public reply goes under the comment, so everyone sees it. It suits short answers that help other readers too: “Link is in the DM”, the opening hours, a thank-you. VivaDialog posts at most one automatic public reply per comment, even when several automations match.
The private DM
This is the path people usually mean by comment to DM automation. Meta allows one private reply to each comment, to the person who wrote it, and the DM lands in their inbox if they follow you and in their message requests if they do not. After that first DM you can send more only when the person answers, and then within 24 hours of their answer. So write the first DM to stand on its own: the link, the price, or the one question you need answered. The full wording advice is in how to send an automatic DM when someone comments on Instagram. Facebook Pages follow the same pattern, covered in the Facebook Page version.
Live comments
During a live video, Meta allows a DM reply only, not a public one, and only while the broadcast runs. An automation can be limited to live comments under Only from. The Live comment INFO template is a starting point.
Story replies and mentions
An automation can be limited to replies to your Story or to mentions of you in someone’s Story. A mention has no text, so a mention rule runs on every mention. One caveat from our own project notes: the Story triggers are built and pass automated tests with sample payloads, but have not yet been run against a real Story reply delivered by Meta. Treat them as available and not yet proven in live use, and read the Story reply article for the test to run before you rely on them.
DMs
Comments often turn into DMs. An automation can answer a DM within 24 hours of the customer’s last message, and can send one reminder DM between 30 minutes and 23 hours after their message if they have not answered. After 24 hours a tool usually cannot reply until the customer writes again. Replying to Instagram DMs after 24 hours covers the two exceptions Meta documents, and the 24-hour window explained covers why comments behave differently.
Limits VivaDialog adds on top of Meta’s
Every automatic reply runs under limits you cannot switch off:
- At most one automatic public reply per comment or message.
- Nothing older than 24 hours gets an automatic reply.
- Your own account never triggers an automation, so it cannot answer itself.
- When an account connected less than 7 days ago sends more than 25 automatic replies and DMs in 24 hours, the Automations page shows a warning. It warns and does not block. The number is our own cautious choice, not a figure Meta publishes.
Hiding a comment is not a reply, so the 24-hour rule does not stop an automation from hiding one.
Is it safe for your account?
Automating replies is not by itself what gets Instagram accounts restricted. Meta offers official APIs for businesses to read and answer comments and messages from other software. The two real risks are tools that log in with your Instagram password instead of using those APIs, and reply patterns that look like spam whatever tool sends them. No tool can promise that Meta will never restrict an account, because Meta decides that.
The quickest test is how the tool connects. With the official API you log in through Facebook’s own screen, it lists the permissions it asks for, and you never type your Instagram password into the tool. A tool that asks for your username and password, or runs a browser that clicks through Instagram for you, is the risky kind. Instagram’s Help Center says apps that offer likes or follows go against its Community Standards.
Meta does not publish the activity levels that lead to a restriction, so nobody can give you a safe number. What is public is the intent: Instagram says it has limits in place to stop direct messages that people may not want to get. The patterns to avoid are the ones that look like unwanted messages:
- Sending DMs to people who never contacted you or commented.
- Replying to every comment with the same sentence, including comments that asked something else.
- A new or newly connected account suddenly sending far more replies than it ever did by hand.
- Replying to old comments in bulk, long after the conversation ended.
A person copying and pasting can trigger the same signals. Is Instagram comment automation safe? has the full checklist. VivaDialog connects through Meta’s official login and APIs only.
Set up your first comment automation
You need a connected Instagram account, which must be a professional account (Business or Creator) linked to a Facebook Page, and an owner or admin role in the workspace.
- Open Automations, click New rule on the Rules tab, and pick a template with Use this. Good first picks are Comment INFO, get the link for a public reply and Comment INFO, get the details by DM for a reply plus a DM.
- Under What starts this automation?, choose New comment.
- Under Which messages?, type the words to look for, separated by commas.
- To limit the automation to Instagram, open Advanced settings and select your account under Only on. To answer Story replies, Story mentions, or Live comments only, use Only from in the same place.
- Under How should it reply?, choose Same text every time or Answer with AI. With AI, write the facts it may use, such as prices and opening hours. It answers only from those facts and says a team member will follow up when it does not know.
- Tick Send a private DM to the person who commented if you want the DM too.
- Use Test it first with a comment written the way a customer would write it. Nothing is sent and no AI reply is used by the test. Then click Save rule.
Under Wait before running? an automation can wait from 1 to 60 minutes first, and the wait is cancelled if your team answers in the meantime.
Each automation has a History link listing every comment it ran on and whether the reply went out. When a reply was not sent, the reason is shown, for example “Outside Meta’s 24-hour messaging window” or “Another automation already replied to this item”. Read it for the first few days after switching an automation on.
Choose the trigger and the words
- A keyword such as
INFOorpriceanswers only the people who ask. It is the safest default for comments. - Every message answers everything, including thanks, tags, and complaints. Use it for a simple away message on DMs, not for comments.
- An intent, written as a sentence such as “the customer asks about the price”, lets AI judge messages no keyword caught. A check that matches uses one AI reply from your quota, and one that does not match uses none.
Keywords are matched as parts of words, so a short word such as fit also matches “benefit”. Pick words with that in mind and test them with the sentences your customers really write. Keep complaints for a person: Skip messages that contain takes words like refund or complaint and keeps the automation away from them, and Skip people who are already customers uses the stage shown on the Contacts page.
Start from a template
You do not have to write the rule from scratch. Instagram auto-reply templates to copy, by business type shows eight copy-ready rules with their trigger words and side effects, the Story reply article lists five for Stories, and the templates gallery has the rest. Change the text to match your business and run Test it first before you save.
Hide spam and abusive comments
Hiding is a different job from replying, and the options are narrower than people expect. In VivaDialog, a comment is hidden only by an automation with the Hide comment action, and only for new comments as they arrive. There is no hide button in the inbox yet, and an automation does not sweep comments that are already on your posts. Live comments cannot be hidden.
Instagram also has its own filters that work before any tool is involved. Its Help Center page on hiding comments you don’t want to see describes a setting for common offensive words and a Hidden Words list you fill yourself. Put the phrases that repeat there first, then use an automation for what the filter misses. The step-by-step version, with a tag-first test run, is in how to bulk hide bad comments on Instagram, and how to hide spam comments automatically covers Facebook and Threads too. The Hide spam template hides and tags without replying.
What happens after the comment
A comment answered by automation can turn into a DM thread, a question the automation could not answer, or a customer waiting for a person. The inbox is where that work lands: comments and DMs from every connected channel in one list, filtered by Waiting for reply, by tag, or by who is handling them. Automatic replies are labeled Sent by an automation or Written by AI, so your team sees what already went out. Let automations tag what they answer, assign what needs a person, and answer DMs well before the 24-hour window closes. Replies you write by hand are never counted toward your plan’s quota and always go out, even when the quota is used up.
Answering with AI
An automation can answer with AI instead of fixed text. VivaDialog’s AI answers only from the facts you write into the automation, and says a team member will follow up when it does not know. Automatic AI replies end with a short note that AI wrote them, on by default. Each AI reply counts toward a monthly quota, and a workspace can add its own AI key to skip the plan quota, as described in use your own AI key for auto replies.
Pricing models, and why they matter for comment campaigns
One successful post can bring in hundreds or thousands of people in a day, and how a tool charges decides what that day costs. A per-contact plan is sized by the people your automations talk to in a month, so a viral post can move you up a plan. A per-message bill follows messages sent, so a reply plus a DM counts twice. A flat plan keeps the price and caps usage instead: VivaDialog counts conversations (one comment or DM thread, counted once a month when the first automatic reply goes out, with a DM sent for a comment counting as the same conversation) and AI replies.
Flat vs per-contact pricing and pay per message vs per contact vs flat pricing work through a busy month with real numbers, and the total cost comparison puts three fixed scenarios through four tools. Plan prices for VivaDialog are on the pricing page.
Choosing a tool
Before you pick, write down which channels you need, how many people your best post brings in, how many people work the inbox, and whether you need AI replies. VivaDialog covers Facebook Pages, Instagram, and Threads in one inbox, plus Telegram bots, email, and a website chat widget, and it reads YouTube comments. It does not support WhatsApp or SMS, and for TikTok it only schedules video posts, so if WhatsApp is your main channel, pick a tool that supports it. VivaDialog flows start on the Growth plan and are a list of steps with waits and branches; if you need a visual canvas for long branching bots, other tools have one.
Best Instagram DM automation tools, compared by price and fit lists eight tools with their prices and when each is the right pick, including when VivaDialog is the wrong one. The single-tool pages are VivaDialog vs ManyChat, VivaDialog vs respond.io, and VivaDialog vs Chatfuel. For prices, see ManyChat pricing, respond.io pricing, and Chatfuel pricing.
The same idea on Threads and Facebook
On a Facebook Page the same comment-to-DM pattern works, with one private reply per comment inside 7 days. On Threads, automations can answer replies to your posts, but Threads has no API for DMs, and an automatic reply can take up to 5 minutes. See how to auto-reply to comments on Threads and Threads keyword auto-reply.
Frequently asked questions
Can an automation reply to Instagram comments in public and send a DM at the same time?
Yes. One rule can post a public reply and send one private DM to the person who commented. Meta allows one DM per comment, within 7 days of the comment.
Why did my automation not answer an old comment?
VivaDialog never gives an automatic reply to anything older than 24 hours, and automations act on new comments. An older comment is left for you to answer by hand.
Can I hide hundreds of old comments at once?
Not in VivaDialog. Hiding happens through an automation on new comments. For comments already on your posts, hiding stays manual in Instagram.
Does comment automation use my quota?
Automatic replies count toward the monthly conversation quota, once per conversation, and AI replies count toward the AI quota. Replies you write by hand never count, and hiding a comment does not use the conversation quota.
VivaDialog is in early access right now, and participants get the Growth plan free for 30 days. The pricing page has the details.
