Yes, you can post an Instagram Story from a computer, but the Instagram app on your phone is still the main place Stories are made, so desktop options come from other tools. The reliable routes are Meta’s own business tools and schedulers that publish through Meta’s official API. VivaDialog’s Schedule page is one of them: you choose an Instagram account, pick Story as the post type, add one image or video, and set the time. This article lists the ways to post a Story from a laptop and then walks through the Schedule page.
For feed posts and Reels, the guide to automating Instagram posts covers every post type. For answering the people who reply to your Stories, see Instagram Story reply automation.
Ways to post an Instagram Story from a laptop
- Meta’s own business tools. Instagram on the web and Meta Business Suite change often, and Meta’s Help Center has the current steps and which post types each one supports. Check there before you plan around a feature.
- A scheduler that uses Meta’s official API. You connect through Facebook’s login screen, approve publishing, and the tool posts the Story at the time you set. This needs an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator).
- Browser tricks and emulators. Some guides tell you to make your browser pretend to be a phone. We do not recommend them. They depend on how Instagram’s website behaves this month, and they can break without warning.
- Tools that ask for your Instagram password. Avoid them. A tool that holds your password can do anything on your account, and Instagram’s Help Center warns about apps that go against its Community Standards. Is Instagram comment automation safe? shows how to tell the two kinds apart.
Schedule an Instagram Story in VivaDialog
You need a connected Instagram professional account: see how to connect your Instagram account.
- Open Schedule in the dashboard and click Schedule a post.
- Under Post from, choose the Instagram account.
- Under Post type, choose Story.
- Under Files, click Upload a file, or paste one public link under Or media links.
- Set the Date and Time. Times use your own time zone, shown under Your time zone.
- Optionally set Repeat to Every day, Every week, or Every month, with an Until date.
- Click Schedule post.
The Story appears on the calendar with the status Scheduled. You can open it to change it, or click Cancel post, until it is picked up for publishing.
File rules for a Story
- A Story takes exactly 1 file, an image or a video.
- Uploads accept JPEG or PNG images up to 8 MB and MP4 or MOV videos up to 100 MB. Instagram takes JPEG images only, so convert a PNG before you use it for Instagram.
- Links must be public https links. The platform downloads the file at publish time, so a link that needs a login will fail.
- A Story has no caption. Put any text into the image or video itself.
- Uploaded files count toward your workspace storage.
After you schedule it
The calendar shows one month at a time, and Show posts for narrows it to one account. A post is Scheduled, Retrying, Publishing, Published, Failed, Cancelled, or Gave up. When posts fail, the page says how many didn’t go out. Open one to read the error and click Schedule again.
Each plan has a monthly quota of scheduled posts: 10 on the free trial, 30 on Starter, 100 on Growth, 300 on Pro, and 1,000 on Premium. Every copy of a repeating post uses one, and cancelled posts still count that month. The pricing page lists the plans.
Link the Story to a reply automation
A scheduled Story can still start conversations. When someone replies to it or mentions you in theirs, an automation can answer with a DM. In the automation’s settings, use Only from to limit it to Story replies. The reply is a DM, so Meta’s 24-hour window applies to it. Instagram Story reply automation has the setup, and how automations work lists the limits that apply to every automatic reply.
