An Instagram auto reply is an automation that answers a comment or a message for you after it matches a rule, such as a keyword. Through Meta’s official API a business tool can answer comments in public, send one private DM to a person who commented, answer DMs within 24 hours of the person’s last message, and answer Story replies. Each surface has its own limit, and most of the trouble people run into comes from mixing them up. This article lists them side by side and then sets one up.
For the rest of the comment and DM setup, see the Instagram comment automation guide.
What each surface allows
| What the customer did | What an auto reply can do | The limit |
|---|---|---|
| Commented on a post or Reel | Reply to the comment in public | VivaDialog does not auto-reply to comments older than 24 hours |
| Commented on a post or Reel | Send one private DM | Meta: one DM per comment, within 7 days of the comment |
| Commented during your Live | Send one private DM | Meta: only during the broadcast, and only a DM, not a public reply |
| Sent you a DM | Reply in the same chat | Meta: within 24 hours of their last message |
| Replied to your Story | Reply in the DM chat | The reply is a DM, so the 24-hour rule applies |
| Mentioned you in their Story | Reply in the DM chat | Same 24-hour rule |
The first four come from Meta’s documentation of private replies and messaging policy. The 24-hour limit on automatic replies to comments is VivaDialog’s own rule, added so an automation never answers a conversation that ended long ago.
Two details trip people up:
- A private DM can start the chat, but it cannot continue it. After the first DM to a commenter, you can send more only once the person answers, and then within 24 hours of their answer. Write the first DM so it stands alone. How to send an automatic DM when someone comments on Instagram has the wording tips.
- After 24 hours, a DM cannot be answered by a tool. Meta documents two exceptions, ads that start a conversation and the Human Agent tag, and VivaDialog uses neither. Replying to Instagram DMs after 24 hours explains both.
Limits VivaDialog adds on top
Every automatic reply in VivaDialog runs under limits you cannot switch off:
- At most one automatic public reply per comment or message, even when several automations match.
- Nothing older than 24 hours gets an automatic reply.
- Your own account never triggers an automation, so it cannot answer itself.
- When an account connected less than 7 days ago sends more than 25 automatic replies and DMs in 24 hours, the Automations page shows a warning. It warns and does not block. The number is our own cautious choice, not a figure published by Meta.
Hiding a comment is not a reply, so the 24-hour rule does not stop an automation from hiding one. How to bulk hide bad comments on Instagram covers that.
Set up an Instagram auto reply
You need a connected Instagram account and an owner or admin role in the workspace.
- Open Automations, click New rule on the Rules tab, and pick a template with Use this. Good first picks are Comment INFO, get the link for a public reply and Comment INFO, get the details by DM for a reply plus a DM.
- Under What starts this automation?, choose New comment for comments or New DM for messages.
- Under Which messages?, type the words to look for, separated by commas. Capital letters do not matter.
- To limit it to Instagram, open Advanced settings and select your account under Only on. To answer Story replies, Story mentions, or Live comments only, use Only from in the same place.
- Under How should it reply?, choose Same text every time or Answer with AI. With AI, write the facts it may use, such as prices and opening hours. It answers only from those facts.
- On a comment, tick Send a private DM to the person who commented if you want the DM too.
- Use Test it first with a comment written the way a customer would write it, then click Save rule.
How to auto-reply to Instagram comments walks through every field, and how automations work covers exceptions, waits, and reminders.
Pick the right trigger
- A keyword (
INFO,price) answers only the people who ask. It is the safest default. - Every message answers everything, including thanks, tags, and complaints. Use it for a simple away message, not for comments.
- An intent, described in a sentence such as “the customer asks about the price”, lets AI judge messages no keyword caught. A check that matches uses one AI reply from your quota.
Keep complaints for a person. The setting Skip messages that contain takes words like refund or complaint and keeps the automation away from them.
Check that it works
Each automation has a History link. It lists every comment or message the automation ran on and whether the reply went out. When a reply was not sent, the reason is shown, for example “Outside Meta’s 24-hour messaging window” or “Another automation already replied to this item”.
Replies count toward your plan’s monthly conversation quota. A DM sent for a comment counts as the same conversation as the comment, and replies you write by hand are never counted. What counts as a conversation has the rules, and the plan quotas are on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Is it allowed to auto-reply to Instagram comments?
Yes, through Meta’s official API. Tools that log in with your Instagram password are the risky kind. Is Instagram comment automation safe? explains how to tell them apart.
How fast does the reply go out?
It depends on when Meta tells VivaDialog about the comment, which we do not control, so we do not promise a time. You can see in the automation’s History when each reply ran.
Can an auto reply answer a DM after 24 hours?
No. Without Meta’s approval for a message tag, a tool cannot answer a DM once 24 hours have passed since the person’s last message. When they write again, the window opens again.
Can I auto-reply on Threads too?
Yes, to replies on your Threads posts, with up to a 5-minute delay. Threads has no API for DMs. See how to auto-reply to comments on Threads.
VivaDialog is in early access right now, and participants get the Growth plan free for 30 days. See the pricing page.
